The People Behind Na Finua

Na Finua exists today because of the shared vision, hard work, and determination of three directors: Max, Reice, and Alan.

The journey began with Max, a pioneer in surf tourism whose career spans more than three decades. Since 1992, he has dedicated his life to discovering exceptional surf destinations and creating experiences that connect people with the ocean, local culture, and the natural environment.

After years of success developing surf tourism in Indonesia, Max witnessed many once-remote breaks become increasingly crowded and commercialised. Determined to preserve the authenticity of the surfing experience, he began searching for a new frontier—somewhere untouched, uncrowded, and rich in both natural beauty and cultural heritage. Through satellite imagery and exploration, he discovered the island that would eventually become Na Finua.

Joining him on this adventure was his long-time friend Alan, an experienced hotel operator whose knowledge of hospitality, guest experience, and resort management has been invaluable throughout the project’s development. Alan shared Max’s belief that tourism should create meaningful experiences while benefiting local communities. His industry expertise has helped shape the vision for Na Finua as more than just a surf destination, but as a world-class island retreat.

Alongside Max and Alan is fellow Director Reice, whose dedication, resilience, and hands-on approach have been instrumental in turning the vision into reality. Since the earliest days of the project, Reice has been deeply involved in the practical challenges of building a resort in one of the most remote parts of the Solomon Islands.

From sourcing and transporting building materials, food supplies, equipment, and essential infrastructure, to helping with construction and working alongside local Solomon Islanders, Reice has played a critical role in almost every aspect of the island’s development.

One of the most memorable milestones came when Max and Reice navigated Na Finua’s new boat from Honiara to the island. Battling rough seas and challenging ocean conditions, they undertook the long journey to ensure the vessel reached its new home safely. The voyage reflected the determination, adventure, and commitment that continues to define the project today.

The early years were far from luxurious. Reice spent many months living on the island while construction was underway, often sleeping in a hammock strung between two trees. With limited facilities and constant challenges, he worked side-by-side with local workers, helping build the foundations of what guests now enjoy today. Through years of perseverance and hard work, those humble beginnings have evolved into comfortable accommodation, modern amenities, and air-conditioned rooms overlooking some of the most pristine waters in the Pacific.

Together, Max, Alan, and Reice have spent more than five years building not only a resort, but a partnership with the local community. Through collaboration with local families, traditional landowners, and Solomon Islanders, they have worked to create opportunities for employment, skills development, and sustainable economic growth.

Each director brings a unique strength to the project: Max’s pioneering spirit and surf tourism expertise, Alan’s hospitality and hotel management experience, and Reice’s relentless commitment to logistics, construction, and community relationships. Together, they share a common belief that tourism can be a force for good—creating unforgettable experiences for visitors while delivering meaningful and lasting benefits to the people who call Na Finua home.

Their combined efforts, alongside the support of local families and workers, have transformed an ambitious dream into a thriving island destination and laid the foundation for an exciting future.
